'From Performance Benchmarking to Knowledge Sharing' - an innovative way to address the syndromes which stifle organisational leadership.

Room H705, London School of Economics, WC2

Chris Collison, Bestselling author, consultant and KM veteran from BP and Centrica presented a Workshop on  a novel approach to performance benchmarking which addresses the very behaviours which prevent sharing and learning in organisations.   “Not invented here” and “tall poppy syndrome” are just two of the many syndromes which regularly undermine efforts to create a culture of organisational learning. Attempts to benchmark performance and create performance league tables often drives sharing further underground, as departments defend their positions and compete with each other.   In 2001, BP created an operational excellence programme designed to counter such behaviours.  The approach used self assessment, and an innovative way of visualising performance through a “river diagram” and “stairs diagram”.  Since that time, the same approach has been adapted for use in a number of very different contexts: Fighting the spread of HIV/AIDS with the United Nations and NGOsImproving Project Management performance in CentricaIdentifying Team Leadership excellence in GCHQImproving networking between consultants in OracleAddressing analytical capability in regional government In an inspirational and practical session, Chris explained the approach, illustrating with stories and lessons learned how the syndromes above can be addressed, and showing how any organisation can successfully combine knowledge-sharing and performance management.
