Learning is Not Enough

30/06/2010 - 20:30

The Barbets Duet began in 2006. It is a 20-year experiment to invent environmental markets and theirsupporting rules and institutions.  It isnamed after tropical birds called Barbets who often sing in duet.  This symbolises the need to harmonise theknowledge of competing cultures for this invention to succeed.

The Barbets Duet is organised around Barbet Learning Sites.  The first five learning sites are in EastAfrica.  In October 2009, the first UKBarbet Learning Site, in Cornwall, joined the experiment while the firstlearning site in the USA, along the Hudson River in New York, was acquired inMay 2010.

Institutional invention, re-invention and organisational learningare a priority for all organisations today whether large or small.  This meeting will be a mixture of storytelling and dialogue, drawing on Barbara’s experience of the Barbets project as well as her earlierwork.

For the last twenty years Barbara has been working withorganisations around the world to help them think long term and manageuncertainty.  She is a specialist in thestrategic implications of investing in non-Western cultures with differentbusiness systems, able to link social and environmental issues toorganisational opportunities and operations.
