The Society for Organization Learning (SoL) was formed in April of 1997 to continue the work of MIT's Center for Organizational Learning (1991-1997). Peter Senge, author of The Fifth Discipline is the founding Chairman of SoL. In 1997 SOL-UK was formed by a number of influential leaders and academics to bring a means to allow UK managers, researchers and consultants to join and share in the benefits of the SoL global community. The founding members were: Arie de Geus, Eve Mitleton-Kelly, Lilly Evans and John Farrago. SOL-UK also has a group of Mentors, which include, Rick Haythornthwaite, Gordon Stevens, Jan Hall, OBE, Lord Williamson. SOL UK’s president is Arie de Geus, author of “The Living Company”. Other members include managers from major organisations, researchers from leading UK universities and consultants from highly regarded practices.
SOL-UK undertook an organisational review and, following the EGM in July 2009, the new board of directors has resumed the more traditional role of ensuring correct legal and financial practice. A Stewards’ Council (consisting of eleven voluntary SOL-UK members) was formed to give new focus and purpose to the community by driving forward real change. This enlarged group represents the membership more fully, and is introducing a new energy and purpose to the society.
